Denim is made in many weights, blends, and finishes. Before washing or treating a pair of jeans, read the garment’s care label and follow any instructions from its maker.
Wash only when the label says it is suitable
When a wash is needed and the care instructions allow it, turn jeans inside out and use the recommended water temperature and cycle. A gentler setting may help reduce friction, but the label should guide the choice for that specific garment.
Keep colours in mind
New or deeply coloured denim may release dye, especially during early washes. Follow the label’s advice, wash similar colours together where appropriate, and avoid mixing garments if you are concerned about colour transfer.
Choose the instructed drying method
Heat can affect some fabrics and finishes. If the care label allows air drying, reshape the garment and let it dry naturally. Use a dryer only when the label recommends or permits it, and choose the setting specified there.
Deal with marks carefully
For a small mark, check the care label before spot-cleaning. Test any suitable cleaning method on a discreet area first, and avoid harsh scrubbing that could change the colour or surface.
